Installing the Voodoo3 card in Windows NT 4.0

Congratulations on your purchase of the most advanced 3D accelerator card in the world, and welcome to the On-line User’s Guide for your Voodoo3 card. These instructions are general in nature, so be sure to review the Owner’s manual for your computer for specific details that may affect the installation.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Hardware Installation section of this On-line User’s Guide has important information that you will need while your computer is shut down and the On-line User’s Guide is unavailable to you. It is very important that you print this section so that you can refer to it during the installation.


Before you begin to install the hardware, watch the Quick Install video to familiarize yourself with the hardware installation process.

Next, if there are any display utilities or control panels for the display card you are currently using installed in your system, uninstall them according to their instructions.

You should also select the standard VGA display driver to ensure your system’s compatibility before you continue. If you are prompted to restart your system for the changes to take effect, choose instead to restart later, then use the "Start" menu to shutdown your system normally when you are ready to remove the old display card and install the new one.


Hardware Installation

If you are familiar with the installation of computer expansion cards, then you should have no difficulty installing your new card using the simple instructions below. If you are not very familiar with this type of procedure, then you should also review the detailed instructions and the Quick Install video clip to familiarize yourself with the hardware installation steps before you proceed. When you are ready to proceed, shutdown your system and use these Hardware Installation Instructions to install your new accelerator card:

Hardware Installation Instructions

  1. Open the computer’s case. Refer to the documentation for your computer for detailed instructions on opening your computer’s case.
  2. Locate the cable connecting your monitor to the current display card and disconnect it from the card.
  3. Remove the screw securing the mounting bracket of the old card and remove the old card from your computer.
  4. Locate an appropriate expansion slot for your new Voodoo3 card (the AGP slot for the AGP version of the card; a PCI slot for the PCI version) and install the Voodoo3 card into that expansion slot.
  5. Connect your monitor’s cable to the Monitor Connector of your Voodoo3 card.
  6. Replace the computer’s cover and restart the system.

When you have replaced the old display card with your new card and restarted your computer, the system will automatically load the standard VGA display driver for your new card and proceed to start-up normally. Be sure that the Voodoo3 CD is in the CD-ROM drive of your computer when it starts. The Quick Install software will reopen this On-line User’s Guide to the software installation section of these installation instructions so you can choose your software options and then finish the installation.


Windows NT 4.0 Display Driver Installation

NOTE: You must be able to log-on as Administrator to be able to change the display properties for the computer. Be sure to select the standard VGA display driver and restart the computer before you begin the installation process. Then shutdown the system and use the "Hardware Installation Instructions" to install your new Voodoo3 card. When you restart the system, follow these instructions to complete the installation.

  1. Place the Voodoo3 CD in your CD-ROM drive. If the Quick-Install software opens, simply close it.
  2. Click the "Start" button, point to "Settings", and then select "Control Panel".
  3. Double-click on the "Display" icon to access the "Display Properties" screen.
  4. Click the "Settings" tab and then click the "Display Type" button.
  5. At the "Display Type" dialog box, click on the "Change" button.
  6. At the "Change Display" dialog box, click on the "Have Disk" button.
  7. At the "Install From Disk" dialog box, type "x:\NT40" (without the quotes) where x is the CD-ROM drive letter and then click "OK".
  8. When Windows NT 4.0 identifies the device as "Voodoo3", click "OK".
  9. The "Third-party Drivers" dialog box will then open, notifying you that you are about to install a third-party driver. Click on the "Yes" button to proceed.
  10. When copying is complete click "OK" and then "Close" on the "Display Type" dialog box.
  11. Close "Display Properties" and restart your system for the changes to take effect.
  12. After you system restarts, a dialog box will open to inform you that you need to use the "Display Properties" dialog box to select your initial settings for the new display device.
  13. Open the "Display Properties" dialog box to the "Settings" page again and select the display options that you require. Close the "Display Properties" dialog box and follow any other on-screen instructions that may appear in order to activate the new display settings you have chosen.

The installation of the Windows NT 4.0 display drivers for your Voodoo3 card is now complete.
